    Posted: 04/May/2010 at 10:51pm
Hey has anyone else had this problem with the 500GT, the tail gear and bottom auto rotation gear mesh has too much slop. I've even tried replacing both with align parts, I've had the stock one strip and 2 align tail drive gears 21 bucks a pop not happy. This is not from hard landings either I set very soft start on the Turnigy 85amp http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10331
with a bit of a fast spool up it strips the gears.
I think the stock boom or side frames a drilled out incorectly because u can't adjust the mesh.
Any one else have this problem any input would be great. I just ordered the Hk 500 carbon side frames and already have the metal boom holder.
I'm a bit tired of pulling and rebuliding the tail every time it's strips.

Mine stopped once I replaced the Main and Auto with Align.
I too stripped both Align and HK tail drive gear prior to changing the main and auto.
I am currently flying on a HK tail drive with no further problems.
Motor is Typoon 500 with the same ESC as yours.
Boom holder is plastic tail gear is HK alloy upgrade.

I had the exactly the same issue with my 500GT. The only way I know how to fix the issue is to spend half an hour with a small file and elongate the locating slots and screw holes in the side frames. This allows you to 'adjust' the mesh between the two gears and when you are happy with it, tighten the screws. I have had no issues since doing this modification.

HI,

there is a second way to fix it, Buy bigger wheels ! The Problem is where to get it.
I have a second heli from Ebay with a toothwheel 0,5mm bigger, but they dont sell spares.
So my next crash will ground my 500GT till i get the right spares as the HK wheels are too small.
None of the Ebay shops tells the exact diameter of the Wheels sold.

Could you please give a short feedback on these cf side frames - does those solve this issue?

I have 2 of the HK 500, both would strip the front tail drive gears because of incorrect mesh.

On both replacing Auto and tail gear with align still had problems.

On both once i replaced the front tail boom case problem is gone.

Ive compared side by side HK 500 and Align 500 side frames and there an EXACT match, every hole, everything about them, NO Difference!

Ive measured the HK and Align gears and there the same also.

In looking at the HK Front tail boom case i SEE no difference.

All i know is what i did and that it fixed the problem, i do notice even on a align 500 there excessive play in the gears.

Just curious but is there any chance this could be caused by an overtight tail belt? I just built the HK500 CMT and the belt was very tight even with the tail boom fully inserted in both ends. I cut about 3 mm off of the rear end of the boom to loosen the belt a tad because I was afraid of exactly what you are talking about or possibly overheating the motor or esc. The gears turn more easier after shortening the boom, loosening the belt. Hoping to avoid this problem all together.

I initially thought this was arelated problem on my gt , but i dont think so . The boom fix doesn't have any bearing (pun) on the tail drive gear, my fix was to elongate the holes in the side of the fuselage and move the whole tail support unit forewad with the gears which then meshes tighter with the main gear. I bought 4 extra tail drive gears as spares for this problem and have not used any since the first strip. Rob
I must remember .... when inverted .... down is up and up is down .

I just received a new HK-500GT kit and after reading this thread have decided to very carefully check the gear mesh at four points of the drive gear and if not perfect I will file the holes to allow adjustment. Check the mesh, rotate 90 deg. and check the mesh. This should give a very accurate reading of the gear roundness. If it is out of round the mesh will vary. If it is not in tolerance ... change the gear. (Align) Seems to me it should have been made with an adjustable mesh.
