Hey Guys,
I just got some Turnigy 2S 5000ma batteries and was astounded to find them wired up with 8 awg wire, huge! Has anyone tried to replace this wire with 12awg as it would fit my deans plugs so much better. If I take the end cap off is there solder tabs I can just remove the 8 awg from and replace with 12awg or its not that simple? (didn't want to bust it open if there's no point) 8awg seems to be massive overkill to me?

Cheers
Simon

8 AWG wire is pretty normal. Castle Creations uses 10AWG wire on its newest ICE series of ESCs.

so how is 8ga cable normal when the esc only has 10ga?

10ga cable is all any of the batteries really need.

perhaps hobby king should get customer opinion and maybe change the 8ga to 10ga?

also, why would you be using horrible deans plugs on a batter that comes with 8ga cable?

big battery, capable of giving 150amps or so, and you want to run a plug rated for 50amps?

I've always used deans plugs with no issues, and lets face it, how often does the battery REALLY draw more than 50amps?

when you're running a 1/8th scale monster truck, that weighs 7kgs, and a 1500+watt motor?

I'm not running a 1/8 scale MT with a 1500W motor that's exactly my point. I'm runnin a 1/10 scale touring car with a Novak 6.5 BL which I previously ran on 4800 matched nimh batteries WITH deans plugs. They handled it then and they will handle it now because this setup will draw NO MORE amps with lipos than it did with the nimh packs.

Anyway, has anyone tried to change the wires on these as yet?

so why did you buy a battery with a massive C rating that you'll never need?

you could have gotten the same capacity batteries, with a lower C rating, half the price, and only had 10ga cable, that fits deans ok.

For the sake of $5 why not? Can we please get this topic back on track?

NO, have not tried replacing wires in not that easy. You will need to take the wrap off and that will void any warranty on the pack. You will have to unsolder wires directly from cells and unless you have 250 watt soldering iron you will put too much heat inside the cell and might damage it. You will be surprised how well the wire conducts heat. Now you have to solder new wires back in, probably further damaging cells with heat build up.
Maybe if you are good at soldering and have the right equipment you can do it, but if you are good at it you can solder 8awg wires to dean and be done with it. I can do it fast now after some practice.

Thanks Vasy, I thought it may be a difficult. I connected a deans last night and it wasn't so bad, just takes practice with the bigger wires as you say. Thanks again :)
