I thought it was too good to be true.... I ordered a couple of Turnigy 6 cell 5000mAh Li Po packs - they arrived today. One has a duff cell and is as useful as a chocolate tea pot. I know i didn't pay as much as I would've done if I'd bought a major brand pack, but I'm p*ssed that having already paid $60 for shipping and customs, I now have to send it back. Also p*ssed that I have to send it to HK as opposed to the German warehouse, which would've been cheaper and quicker. It was DOA - quality control is obviously lacking.

I have a post under the battery charger section about a rash of #1 cells dying on me thinking maybe the charger was sucking that cell dry through the balance plug after charging but everyone who chimed in thought, in their case anyway, it was the battery. I've lost Rhino, Zippy's & Turnigy's this way.
I'm thinking about throwing some money at the name brands before jumping into 6 & 8 cell power plants and having $60.00 bricks. Do you have experience with any of the name brands? Is that the answer? What brands have treated you right, or wrong? |

I have not bought 5 or 6 s lipos, but 3 s turnigy lipo's and have only trouble with them.
Within 2-4 flights they start swelling. This is without pushing them. They are used in a small parkflyer with low amps and low watts and have only deleted each cell to 3.9. But they come down a little swollen at first, then as time goes on they swell more. Now one has swollen so much I think the balance wires are stretching off their solder and my charger tells me that 1 cell is at very low voltage.
I have not had any trouble with flightmax or Rhino.
I will not be buying any more Turnigy batteries as all my turnigy batteries have only had total of 15 to 20 chargers.

I do have some experience of a few brands of Li Po. Good and not so good. But firstly I must point out that I am sport flying and not 3d. That said, if my 600 drops from the sky because a battery has failed, it's still going to hurt it regardless of what style I crashed in!
But the question was about my experience with brands. I'm not at home at the moment so am working from memory w here. Align batteries seem OK and reasonably priced. I'm liking the Flight Power EON packs too - always charge and balance OK. You could probably get 4 Turnigy packs for the price of 1, though. I have had the Flight Power packs for 5 months or so, and they have been used more weekends than not. I would not expect to see any weakness at this stage, but the www is full of reports to the contrary with ANY brand. Forest Gump would probably tell more interesting stories about Li Po experiences, but I've had a couple of uncomfortable ones limited to packs which either get quite hot (an align pack that had definately paid for itself) and a Thunder Powerpack that charges OK yet won't hold enough power for an initial trimming hover after only 20 cycles. There is another brand that I use but won't write about until I can be specific about the model and will therefore add it later on. But I'm kind of hedging toward the bigger brands unless support is provided at a more reasonable cost. I'm told (yesterday) that my replacement has shipped. Let's see what customs say about my paying duty on a warranty return item. I use a decent voltage detector (Spartan Li Po guard). They aren't cheap but still cheaper than writing off a model. I also use the timer on my Tx and a decent branded charger. I was originally advised by a respected UK supplier to use an I max charger, but I got concerned when it wouldn't recognise all the cells in the brand new packs that I tried to charge. I bought a Bantam and it did the job. There are others, I'm sure - but I'm also certain that if a charger can't recognise the number of cells then it's capable of mis Reading other stats. I like my house and it's occupants enough to not want to risk them in a fire, and take all the precautions of charging in a fire proof container etc. I hope this doesn't come across as a self justification for what I've bought. It's just personal experience based on some good and indeed bad decisions. As soon as you buy something like a Li Po you can read all sorts of horror stories. Success stories too! In closing, a supplier that I bought a pack from explained that the different brands have different return policy / attitudes. No doubt this relies on the relationship between the LHS and it's supplier, but you will either benefit of suffer from this if you need to return anything. Worth bearing in mind and indeed asking about before you buy. Good luck & happy landings! |

I'm the one that commented in another thread.
what I forgot to mention is that my mates 5000mah, 3s lipo, swelled up on the first charge!!! and never went back down again. it won't balance charge properly either. I believe he is contacting hobby king about it, it is clearly a factory fault. |

Well Bob thanks for your input. I also find opinions & reports so varied from brand to brand. The bad part is there is probably only 3 or 4 companies making all of them!
I would agree with flyfly that I have had the most trouble with Turnigy. They're out in my book. The one of three owned Rhinos I lost was dented from a crash so I would say they have treated me best. I have no experience with any name brands and have spent the winter getting ready for the season building H&M Warbird's Corsair & Spitfire 60 size you may have seen on eBay recently. Also need power for a Hangar 9 150 size P-51D electric conversion thats ready to go and really don't want any damage as that's my whole seasons budget! I think I'll try the Polyquest unless I see to much negative on them. Happy air time to all! |

an update.
my 4s 5000mah turnigy got more out of balance overnight, it was actually pretty close yesterday. also, my mates brand new 3s, 5000mah lipo refuses to balance! it was getting closer, 4.16 - 4.20v or so, but when he left it over night on the balance charger, it got more out of balance?!?! wtf? I know his charger isn't the best, but I don't think the charger is entirely at fault. |

there was another thread in the French section.
someone posted a pic of his brand new 5000mah Zippy lipo that ballooned. sorry I don't speak French, but here's the thread: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7046 it really does seem to me that Hobby King got a bad batch of 5000mah cells... |

That may be the case, but even the most basic quality control would pick up this before the packs left the warehouse. What really p****s me off is the time and cost related to getting bad items replaced. My recent note from Hobby King tells me that a replacement has been sent. It took almost 2 weeks for them to ship, but (here's the best bit) it may take 45 days to reach me.
I think there was a shipping option that took 45 days, but I paid for shipping to the UK in 3 days - shipping wasn't cheap. I also sent it back (chose an option that took about the same amount of time. So why do I have to wait 45 days? I'm hoping that this is an upper estimate, but it's been a few days and I won't hold my breath. On another note.... in my earlier post I offered my experience with other brands. I wasn't at home at the time of writing, but am now. So, here is my follow up: Outrage. Very good packs. No signs of wear and tear as yet. They must be 6 months old by now. Thunder Power. I bought an Extreme Series pack approximately 20 cycles ago. It still balances well, but won't discharge enough power to maintain anything above 3.7v. What I mean is that my Lipo Guard flashes as soon as I try to spool up and take off, and I don't even get off the ground. There isn't enough head speed to take off. Align packs seem good for what I've done with them and I would buy more. My two Flight Power EON packs are causing me a little concern. One of them timed out on my charger this weekend. It's a bad sign. After 2 hours the cells were 4.18 and 4.19. I had them in September. some might say that they haven't been broken in as yet. I'm looking at buying some packs from Giant Cod. I have heard some very good feedback with regard to customer service, and they ship fast. A friend ordered on a Friday and took delivery on a Saturday. Personal notes sent from the chap that runs the business bode well. |

Just thought I would drop in my two cents... I received a 3C Lipo, tunigy, and it was also DOA.
Same problem with having to ship it back at my cost, almost the same price as the battery was! Now the waiting game to see how long it takes to actually reach me. First time it took over a month to reach me because of Chinese New Year. Not very happy about paying for something and not getting a working product for over three months!
