Some turnigy lipos come with 8awg wire.
I've soldered Deans to this lipos but the wire is massive for such a small welding surface of the connector.
I'd like to ask what would be an ideal connector, ec5? ec3? ec3 seems a good option but I don't know if the 3.5mm bullet will fit such a wide wire.
I'd like to use connectors that are fool proof, so bananas are not an option.

I had a hell of a time soldering 10awg to a deans connector. I couldn't imagine 8wg.

That's why I ask! :-)
I just want to know if EC3 would be enough or if I should go for Ec5...

the EC5's will take 8ga, EC3 won't even fit 10ga properly.

the EC5's seem reasonable, but sometimes they can be pretty tight to unplug.

10ga cable fits on deans just fine.

an update for anyone who cares.

I attempted to solder 12ga cable to some EC3 plugs,

the conductors fitted in the bullet just fine, but I was unable to insert the bullet into the housing, as I couldn't apply enough pressure without simply mashing the cable, and the insulation was the same size as the end of the bullet, so I couldn't use a small screw driver to push it in.

I went back to crappy deans!

@AmmoJammo: Nice job with the deans connectors.  I'm too worried about melting the plastic. I have ruined a couple connectors in the past because I couldn't get the heat to soak into the wire fast enough.

FYI:
A buddy of mine just got some zippy packs(5000mAh 2s 40c) that have 8ga wire on them. I soldered the wires to some Traxxas style connectors and the wire fit perfectly. The 8ga wires insulation fits perfectly inside the traxxas connector. If the insulation was any larger it wouldn't fit.

If I remember correctly the deans connectors are rated at 80A. 5Ah, 40C means 200A.

I measured the contact resistance of a deans connector at 0.3 mOhm(*). At 100A that's 30mV, and 3W (6W for the whole connector!). That's too much for such a small connector. It will desolder the connections, melt through isolation tape etc etc.

So if you are able to restrict yourself to say 16C, and stay under 80A, then Deans might still be the way to go....

(*) I'm a bit stupid. I didn't write it down. It may have been 3mOhm, but that would mean 30W at 100A. That would fry it immediately. I don't think it's that bad... :-)

I ended up just using 5.5mm bullets:

I really wasn't happy with anything else, and I'm still not happy with these either!

but, they seemed like the best of a bad bunch.

Search the net, there are videos that show that you ahve to push the bullet with a small screwdriver into the housing.
I've ordered EC-5 and a few lipos, as soon as I get them (they are backordered) and I solder them, I'll post the result.

the insulation on the 12ga cable was slightly bigger than the outside of the bullet on the EC3 connectors.

therefore.

there was nothing to push the screwdriver on! :)
