1. if the signal is lost the reciever stops the signal to the ESC and servos and they stop.
2. it is 2,4 GHz so no problems as with 40MHz and the range is good. after 100m you can't see your boat or where it is going.

For the Rest of the setup, i would say bigger everything, because boats need a lot of Amps at the start.
I would suggest you find yourself ar e forum for Electric Raceboats, like rumrunners in the US or rc-raceboats in Europe.
The moore expensive boats/planes the better transmitting systems I use. Hardly any in the competition field use basic systems like HK or similar.
maxx78, I tested my four systems 1- 35 MHz and 3- 2,4GHz systems and you are right, electric motors run by ESC doesn't need fail safe. Only if it is mecanical SC, which is quite uncommon today. Nitro and gassers still need failsafe. For a boat it isn't a big deal if it stops. It takes 5-10 sek to shut the ESC off. But a big expensive electr. plane still need failsafe for safety. the servos stops in the last position, but for a boat, who cares.

Back to the original question!
When a newbee asks a question I prefer to listen and let the advice be on his/hers level and that was not competition race. There is no difference verses boats and planes, models or in reality. they all need lots of power at start. Definately planes.
For race purposes all of you are right, the bigger the better.
We all have different preferences. Everybody doesn't like rcing on a high level.
But I'm also sure that you are good at what is your preference.

Have a nice day, unless you already have other plans.
