Hello
Ive punctured a LiPo sack (the grey layer) accidentally when scraping off excess hot glue with a knife. It emits a distinct smell - is this poisonous?
Furthermore is safe/adequate to repair by simply taping over it and/or applying glue to seal the cut?
Please assist.
Kind Regards,
Derku

I don't think it's poisonous, but since you've opened up a cell, that cell IMO wouldn't be safe to use. Could burn or explode. You could salvage any other cells in the pack and throw that one away.

Ron: He is talking about lipo sack, not lipo pack.
![]() Lipo sack is the protective bag which is used to prevent lipo fires from spreading if a mishap occurs during charging. To the OP: If the puncture/tear is small in length, it shouldn't really matter. Consider it an additional vent hole, if you will. ![]() Edited by Asad - 30/Sep/2009 at 6:15pm |

If you're really concerned with it you could use a dab of silicone sealer to seal the hole.
![]() I thought this was what he was talking about..... I consider this a Lipo sack! Now if he said he punctured a lipo cell...well no mistake about that. ![]() Edited by wchiro - 03/Oct/2009 at 2:49pm |

Yes, but, if it releases a "distinct" smell of any kind, I would consider it a ruined pack or cell. If only slitting the covering of a pack, there, IMO, should be no smell other than the air we breath.
The smell has to come from somewhere. And it wouldn't come from slitting the covering which is applied after the cells are manufactured and sealed.

Just to be clear, you're referring to the Lipo Charge Sack here, right?
The charge sack has a distinct smell when new and I can only guess that if punctured a similar smell would escape from between the layers. As with the original smell this one should also subside with time. If on the other hand it's a battery you're referring to, then better safe than sorry: don't use it again. |

Hello all! Thanks for such a huge response!
Though I must clarify, I actually mean a LiPo 'pack'? the cells which store electricity :P NOT the safety sack!
Excuse the confusion! My mistake with terminology.
With that said, Ive sealed the punctured LiPo pack with hot glue and it works fine - im sure its not as safe and I dont recommended it actually. But if anyone has any ideas as to safely salvage a damaged LiPo pack, a single cell, please share.
Kind Regards,
Derku

Like somebody said earlier, throw that cell/pack away
It is a fire hazard now.
No matter how good it looks/works, it can blow up when you least expect it. Better safe than sorry.
If I was you, I'd salvage remaining cells, have a pyro show with the damaged cell :) . Salvaging requires attention, so you dont blow them up in your hands./damage other cells.
