HI all,

I've been flying helis for a few months now and am ready to try fixed wing. My 2 sons are also interested and I'd love to share this hobby with them (they're aged 7 and 5). I'm mostly interested in an EDF jet but don't want something that's too fast or hard to fly... Any recommendations appreciated.

Obviously the F22 or F14 look the most tempting but they're probably a little fast too... So something that is EDF, but good for getting started with would be the best.

Thanks in advance

You really don't want to start with an EDF as your first plane. Very hard to learn on.

I suggest you start with a Bixler or equivalent - great starter plane.

Deathwarmed up is right -- an EDF is not the best place to start.

The AXN is an excellent starting point for getting to grips with fixed-wing flying:

Why the AXN?

And, if you decide to go with the AXN, here's my build video series:

You'll find plenty of demonstrations of what the AXN can do in my xjet youtube channel.

Thanks for the response guys. The EDF's look the best, but I guess I have to start somewhere. Will check out the models you listed.

Probably one of the best measures to take is to start with a simulator.
HK have the aerofly professional, its cheap and it makes crashing cheap. You can connect your PC to a big screen teli.
After that some lessons with a buddy box set up is especially good.
Teaching yourself to fly is a long process and very expensive[I know from experience].
I also have the AXN floater it is a very good stable plane,EDF is for experienced pilots but also make cool ornaments for inspiration
Simulator - buddy box lessons - AXN floater - EDF
Goodluck

I taught myself on gliders, then progressed to power ,then helis[it took me years and thousands of $'s],I have 6 EDF's in the hanger[ I wrecked them one by one till I learnt to use a capapult to launch].I taught my mate to fly in a matter of weeks using the system I have recommended, the simulator on the big screen and good sound is pretty good and the kids will love it

That's how I should have done it trev... I started on helis, went through many many parts. Now the kids are bugging me endlessly to get onto planes... I'm sure they'd have to be easier than helis.

Will try the "laptop on the plasma" method too... Thanks for the advice.
