While it may look impressive you should be aware that 3000 metres is well into commercial/military airspace.
I don't know what the regulations were for that but over here anything above about 300 metres is illegal without special clearance from the Civil Air authorities and also requires flight plans being filed with Air Traffic Control (plus constant contact with ATC) |

Suddenly I felt so strangled with the reminder of rules and regulations.
Well but that's a great flight attempt. Sometimes one needs to break the rules to break some records, even if it was personal. Just like how a computer hacker is being recruited by intelligence agencies for their talents. |

True - a great flight but those rules are there for a very good reason - what happens if the model is sucked into a jet intake or it appears on radar and is misidentified as a bogie?
All flights in that region are planned in advance so that ATC knows what's there - if something turns up that they can't identify all sorts of problems ensue - flights are diverted (at best) It just needs a bit of thought first - if there's a record attempt being made, then ATC clearance is essential (along with application for exemption, filing a flight plan and so on). |

That's when solutions must be induced instead of shoving it away with rules like a lazy boss who do not wish for a better life for the future of civilisation. Sooner or later, someone will have to come up with advanced radar and sensors to detect our R/C vehicles and biological life forms in the air then properly come up with a brilliant easy-to-follow rule for everyone.
If rules are stapled for roads to only be used by horses, the idea of driviing, cycling or even motobiking would had been just an imagination or a rule to be broken for people who just want to travel in different ways, be it for recreation or a necessity. Without such rule breakers, the authorities will not have the awareness to create better rules for us. "If it is not broken, don't fix it." A common saying and also a hopeless defect in general human to not have the ability to foresee such little details about R/C hobby. A complex and controversial point I'm making here which I think might invite trouble. So I'll just stop here since my point has already been made. For a person who stays in a country which has rules system that rivals North Korea - I'm just simply ranting. |

Actually 50 YEARS ago our Early Warning radar could pick up planes taking off on the East German border ( worked on maintenance of Chain Early Warning back then)
Some rules are essential - air traffic control is like the laws on motoring - you can't drive at whatever speed you like on whichever side of the road you like - is that 'bureaucracy'? They have 'lanes' just as a road does - or do you advocate driving a push bike across a motorway with high speed traffic? As I said, there's nothing wrong in applying for permission to fly for a record altitude - you just have to let people KNOW that you're going to be up there and all other traffic can be told that (or do you think a 747 pilot is going to be happy when one of his engines sucks in an assortment of metal parts that shouldn't have been there?) |

You worked on AMES 1 - aka Chain Home or Chain Low - AMES 2? Jeez how old are you? And .... Chain was absolutely defunct 50 years ago (1962 ...) and the sites wre mostly dismantled apart from those used to develop the ROTOR system! A few masts still exist today but thats about it. Be VERY careful how you answer this as I am ex RAF more than once stationed at RAF's Fylingdales, Saxa Vord and Portreath.

Chain Early Warning (Trimingham). I was a GRF(C) keeping 56, 64 and 4476 (aka 'the font') consoles up and running. We were also CEL (covering the live firing range for Coltishall). Rotor and Convoy were the normal names (fixed and mobile). I was there early 60s - probably about the time the name changed, but we usually still said 'CEW' - then a lot has changed. Locking is now a housing estate
You weren't at Saxa Vord when they lost the 80 in a snowdrift were you? We sort of fell round laughing when that happened
And despite reports that it never happened, I actually saw that trace of the bogie who covered the full screen on a 64 in four sweeps (1 minute). I was walking up to the cyclops when I heard the Sqdn MT shout 'what the ----'s THAT' and looked over Edited by Daithi - 07/Jun/2012 at 4:54am |

Well, to clarify one thing.
I was refering to radar technology far more complex than simply "sensing" objects in the air. I'm talking about specific indentification and classification - be it a specific breed of bloody pigeons or a HobbyKing AXN. A system to be integrated into air traffic control around the world. A technology that will benefit the R/C Community and incoming mass Personal-Air-Transport systems. Problem that I witness, everyone is so busy creating rules and enforcing rules that solutions are always overlooked or shoved aside. Simply saying, not all rules are as good as they were meant for. Some does more harm than help, from a very wide perspective. Unfortunately, the way I see it, it takes breaking some rules to make adjustments for the better good. Let's face the simple fact. Not all aircraft have transponders. Flying models in a controlled airspace is illegal without ATC clearance. The rules are there for safety reasons - or do you advocate that all airspace be a 'free for all' where anyone can fly wherever they want no matter what else may happen to be there?
You fly in the path of a civil flight - how is ATC going to tell you that there's an imminent collision (or do you believe that the full size plane is just going to have to move out of your way)? |
