Hi

What is a nice setup for the TURNIGY TALON V2?

I have no background on Quads so I thought this would be a good start..

Frame - Turnigy Talon V2
Board - HK V 2.1
ESC - ?
Motor - ?
Prop - ?
Connectors - ?
Accessories - If any ?

Please help !

Thanks

Have a look at my build blog for some ideas: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=25638

The Talon frame wasn't available then, but the parts are working nicely together and I'd happily use them on the Talon frame instead. The whole setup has plenty of grunt (easily lifts 600 grams so far) so it should work fine for most applications apart from aerobatics.

I suggest you buy a HK power distribution board rather than making your own like I did.

looking at the size of the talon i'd say

1000-1100 KV motors
20A ESC's
8X5 / 9X5 or 9X4.5 props (you can use 10 inch props but the whole quad gets sluggish to fly(order plenty cw and ccw sets if you are new to quads.. you will destroy a lot of them..LOL)
1800 - 3300 Mah 3S 20C-35C lipo's

3mm bullet connectors from esc to motor. (so you can swap them if the motor turns in the wrong way)
a power board (do an e-bay search for this)
a cable/connector from lipo to powerboard.
some zip ties and maybe some electricians tape
M3 nylon standoffs
a good thing to protect your board is the top of a DVD RW spindle.

get some LED's in two colors, first it just looks cool.. second it helps with orientation.

there are more affordable flight boards around. (i wished HK had more choice.) the (HK)KK boards are great FC's but for a little more you can have autostabilization. (like the FreeFlight board) and for a heap more you can have GPS, Auto level, and more.

any 4ch transmitter will work with (HK)KK boards

Hey Thanks klaw and chief...

Nice build thread ..

I'll be going with the HK board as its convenient to order atone place.. I can't decide on the motor .. Also why would it get sluggish with 10" props ..?

Anyway if you can recommend any particular motor would be great..

Thanks for the help..

the bigger the prop the bigger the inertia. so it takes more time for the prop to speed up and slow down.
and to stay stable a multi rotor needs fast prop response. the faster a prop can change speed the easier it can stay stable. if the props don't speed up and slow down as fast it takes longer to perform the needed thrust difference the more "sluggish" the copter will get.
the problem can't be tackled with just bigger motors.
the motors can speed up the bigger prop faster but the inertia makes the prop maintain his speed longer, so slowing down stays a propblem.

hope this clarifies it a little.

something to bite into if you are deeper into the whole multi rotor experience and want to do something new...

i have not seen a multi rotor with Variable Pitch Props, but if one would make a multi with VPP's they can use very big rotors because thrust is no longer controlled by speed alone but by pitch to. need more thrust on a prop (speeding up on a multi rotor) translates to changing the pitch up. when there's less thrust desired (slowing down on a multi rotor) the pitch can go down just as fast as the servo can change. (and that's a lot faster than a big prop can slow down)

Some 600 size heli tailrotors might work :)
Go belt drive and only use a single motor?
power to weight of direct drive vs belt losses and big single , hmm.

That variable pitch quad is just insane. I love it.

With regard to using big props: As you can see in my build blog thread, I used 10x6 props for my quad. I have to say - it's not sluggish at all, it's quite twitchy and responsive.

Having said that, my quad is designed for heavy lifting (FPV) rather than aerobatics. As a result, I've gone for big 750kv motors and large props for good "traction."
