Being that the vertical stabilizer has a narrow width and in turn, a longer turning radius when used, I've decided to mod mine by simply adding more rudder surface. I've used a basic juice bottle(the flat area) and carefully cut out a pair of fins that I've added to the center of the rudder with some 5 minute epoxy. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/HK_movies2.asp?idmovie=3b38ee9fe2f543638781883bd2a8d5fa

Test flight on 3/23/12, with rudder mod, proved very successful. Mod works great and now I don't have to just rely on ailerons to turn so much, anymore. Wish I could add the flight vid, but the wifes hand isn't steady at all when it comes to following the plane and the video is a disaster.

Why all that trouble? Just remove the aileron Y-cables and plug the servos individually into the receiver and program aileron differentials.

Then you can turn with aileron and a bit of rudder.

No trouble at all, quite fun actually. I never wanted diff's, but I did want rudder control for banks. Plus this plane needs more rudder surface, to begin with.

Did the larger surface cause the clevis clips to fail. Mine broke on the second flight and smashed the plane. Crappy little plastic things. Got spare tail planes if want - HK won't honor any warranty on their parts. Good luck.

I didn't have any problems whatsoever with the clevis breaking. The mod worked great! I was really happy that I could bank as quickly with my phoenix using the rudder mod, as I can with my radian. The larger rudder surface area, is what's needed on the phoenix 2000, so that one can bank without too much sink rate, from using ailerons alone. When you say that yours broke on the second flight, are you meaning with using my rudder mod?

I think he meant the clevis grip. This is a notorious problem with this glider.. you need to re-inforce or tighten the clevis with either silicon fuel tube or a zip tie to prevent it from unclipping in flight.

If anyone has used my rudder mod, please let me know how well it's worked out for you and what difference it has made.
