Here is how I do it if I want a really accurate meassurement: Hang the plane from a hook with a loop around each wing. Then hang a weight in a string from the same hook, and it will point exactly at the center of gravity. This way you can trim it to within a fraction of a millimeter.

I must remember .... when inverted .... down is up and up is down .

For those of you that would like to do the C of G without worrying about the aircraft slipping onto the ground or poking holes in the wings take a look at this.
THIS IS NOT MY IDEA I'm just passing it on and all credit goes to the original inventor.
Its simple and cheap, aircraft stays where it is and you can put things in different places to get the correct C of G without the aircraft falling.
I have tried many balancers and this one is the only one I will use, Its just that good. So have a read and then go make one , takes about 30 mins to make from junk bits and a bit of thin rope.
