Thank you Mav75, I'm also very thankful for that. Makes one rethink the way that things are done when handling these types of batteries.

Read my post again. This will not give access to all cells individually.

The charger is not able to balance the pack or monitor the voltage of each cell. It's stranged that these kind of chargers will charge with only the outer connections.

I beg to differ with you on that. I've had my batteries tested out at the field on numerous occasions and found that all cells balance out quite nicely using this adapter plug. Try it sometimes if you're doubtful.

If your balance lead went bad, how can you possibly know the pack is in balance? If one or both of the outer wires on the balance plug lost connection you still can use the remaining wires of the balance plug, in combination with the discharge wires, to measure cell voltages, but I assume that is not how the pack was connected to the charger. If there was a magic adapter that made it possible to balance charge through discharge wires, no pack would need a balance plug.

I agree Flarssen, there is no way at all of knowing each cells voltage using the 2 wire discharge lead. Sure the total pack voltage may be 12.4 volts but that could be made up of 2 Cells at 3.8V and 1 cell at 4.8v.

Max the way balance plugs actually work is Wire 1 to negative = voltage of cell 1, wire 2 to negative = Cell 1 Voltage + Cell 2 Voltage, wire 3 to negative = Voltage of cell 1 + Voltage of Cell 2 + voltage of cell 3. The charger then does some simple maths to work out the voltage of each cell, it just not possible to work out individual cell voltage from 2 wires.

For anyone reading this who is considering taking sides. It is absolutely essential that the balance lead be connected at all times.

Just recently a bloke lost his car because he was charging a Lipo without connecting the balance leads. Lipo was unbalanced, Lipo caught fire, car caught fire, told you so moment, guy learns importance of balance leads.

With alk due respect, I could apply the same logic to a drink driver.

"I drove home drunk the otherday and I got home ok"

It's not a good idea, it's bad practice, it has the potential to cause serious harm also

I completely agree with you, it is very dangerous and as you can see from the photos, I've learned my lesson the hard way. Since the latest incident, I went out to my truck to charge my li-po battery and I never left it until an hour and a half later after the battery had fully charged, but now, I'm looking into purchasing some more li-po's with balance leads that work.

I'm not sure I want to get into this hobby now. It sounds like just charging the batteries is too dangerous. Let alone the total distruction of my plane when it crashes. My budget is limited. it would take so long to come up with the money to replace anything that broke, that when I finally fly again, I'd be flying like a nooby again.

Oh! by the way, I see what looks like mostly "Airplane" pilots here. I Fly Helicopters. though I started out flying a Syma S107g coaxial Micro heli. It's really little more than a toy, but it helped me learn My basic piloting skills. ALL THE HELI PILOTS IN THE HOUSE SAY "HEY HO!"
