I would not go above 1.
I use 0.4A
At 1A my pac's get a little warm.
Do:
Auto
0.4A
My pacs get warm but not hot.
And as you know
Hot is bad
I am checking the LSD on these now
My thing longevity of the charge.

The best thing is to keep an eye on the temperature, and then turn down the amperage if they get too hot. It is my experience that different makes of nimh batteries can handle different amounts of current before getting hot, so I would not just use one setting based on capacity, I would see what amount keeps them within an acceptable range of heat. I would never go above 1C though, and most often I charge them at around ½C or even lower.
