Anyone for more Rudder? I've heard of people cutting into their elevators to get more throw but didn't give it much thought till bored today sitting in hobby room soldering etc. So grabbed the hobby knife and started very carefully peeling back the film. I got half way through it and wondered what I had gotten myself into but thought I'm too far in now so keep going.....

Then cut away at the offending balsa...
I got a bit happy with the hobby knife trimming the original piece to refit it but had some 9mmx5mm balsa stick so made a fresh piece..
Trim away excess balsa and start recovering...
Finished off with the wifey's clothes iron, you'll notice the yellow stripes missing, casualties of a too hotter iron.... If your going to use a clothes iron you wont need it over half throttle... Cheers
Shot of one side modded and one original... Heaps more throw and can't wait for some knife edge stupidity tomorrow HAHA.....
Difference in throws...Left modded, Right original..... ![]() ![]() Edited by Hoverin - 17/May/2012 at 10:58pm |

Well the rudder was a success, super slow knife edges, but had a little incident with the elevator servo stripping it's gears. Went behind trees at speed before I could do anything, went in hard and fast.... Oh well onto bigger and better things, hey Richard, if you need any parts let me know, wings are serviceable with a little repair, and the tail section.....

Hi Hoverin
Like the mods to the elevator... Seems a much more apropriate design. Very sad to see what happen to your Extra... I created a very simmilar piece of artwork some weeks earlier with my Katana.. It's not a good feeling... You will have to let us know what your next project will be... |
