Hi I'm Back again and need help in getting the very soft start to work on my esc set it up using the Turnigy Programming card for 85A ESC but its not a so very soft start-up some have told me to use the governer and I've been told to use a flat line throttle curve so being a little confused I'm coming to the Experts and if someone could explain how to set-up a straight line throttle curve my set-up now is on channel 1 normal/channel 2 stunt and # 3 empty should i put this flat curve on channel 1 and bump the other 2 up to ch2 and ch3 Turnigy Brushless ESC 85A w 5A SBECEdited by helibuff61 - 23/Jan/2012 at 3:32am |

You need a very flat gradient between off and 2nd point. If your TX throttle curve has 5 points then experiment with low value for #2.
For a linear % curve you would normally use 0 - 25 - 50 - 75 - 100. In your case try starting with 0 - 10 - 50 - 75 - 100 for your NORMAL mode and experiment with the setting to get the start-up you want. You would have to switch to IDLE-UP at a throttle position where the two curves match to avoid a sudden power surge that might bugger your gear train. This is only a starting point. All the other positions will need to be changed according to the requirements of your ESC, motor, and pitch curves anyway. |

Ch2 normal for huvering lesson L=0% 1/4=35% MID=66% 3/4=77% FULL=82% cH3 Stunt L=0% 1/4=45% MID=61% 3/4=75% H=86% Once i've reached idleup speed on channel 1 i can change over to Ch2 ? |

Sorry - I missed your reply and question. My Futaba radio does not give me so many choices - I only have normal and Idle-up. All flying is done in Idle-up. Normal is only used for powering up and throttling down. At some point in the curve - around Mid point - you need to have a close match with the throttle setting on the channel you switch to or you will get a sudden power surge which will cause havoc with your gear train. I use wooden blades at around 2300 rpm and to achieve the lower speed I use a 10t pinion which means instant acceleration and stripped teeth if I don't get it right. |

With that ESC I have found that you will never get an extremely soft start. I had it on my 500 and even if I set curve to 0%, 10%, 50%, 75%, 100%, it would still be a bit violent on spool. Anything below 10% and it doesnt even seem to want to start. So if you do 0, 5, 25, 80, 100, or something like that it doesnt seem to spool until you hit the 25 mark. 0-10% is about the best you can do for slow start. If you are trying to setup a flat curve, it would be something like 90,90,90,90,90, but this wont help your soft start, although this is what most folks would fly with, like Sooty said, use normal curve to get headspeed up, then flip to idle1 or 2, for flat curve, your tail will hold better and much more consistent flight characterisitcs... An ESC with a TRUE soft start will allow you to start in idle1, simply turn off throttle hold and let it softly spool up to 90 or whatever you set, without tearing your heli apart. I havent found an HK ESC that caan do this yet myself...

I forgot to mention a point that kev.keene raised because I do it all the time without really thinking about it:
With my Plush ESCs set to soft start I have no problems spooling up in Idle Up. Not exactly scale speed start up but I don't do scale - just want to get flying asap. |
