    Posted: 06/Jan/2012 at 11:02am
A couple of months ago I recieved 2 X HK SS 40/50ESC that I could not program for 3 cell use. They were returned and after a considerable time were replaced. Today I recieved the replacements ,and find that they are the same as the ones that I returned.Only customers trying to program 3 cells will have this problem as I could program them for all other cells.I would have thought that me telling HK about this problem would have set warning bells ringing, and that they would have checked there stock on hand to make sure the problem was fixed.(wrong)looks like I will have to go through a long draw out process and more postage cost and if I am lucky ,I may be sent two more ESC's that dont work.

Posted on product page by David Bacon:
Bought 2, installed 1, and I found complete programming info elsewhere, so now I have it running fine. Do a search for "50 Amp Esc" and you might find the answers as I did.
Don't give up until you have located the programming sheet and set it up properly.
Also make sure you supply proper control voltage, as it doesn't have BEC. I started with 6V, and it would beep-out complaints, 4.5V seems to work fine. Just in case you don't want to find the programming info, I will see if it fits in this review:
1. TAKE OFF PROP!!!
2. Turn on Rec, ESC, then Xmit with throttle on full, listen to beeps:
3. Musical tone, then 1 beep indicates that battery type can be programmed. This is repeated three times, then same but 2 beeps, then 3 beeps, 4, 5, and 6, all repeated three times, and it starts all over again. When you hear the one you want, go to 1/2 throttle. Here is what they www.link & Cutoff
FIVE=Timing
SIX=PWM setting
4. Next you select the choice within that option, with beeps coded to say where you are, again each choice is repeated three times, and when you hear the one you want, go back to full throttle, here they are: (Short-Long)
1-1 = NiCd
1-2 = 7 cell LiPo
1-3 = 6 cell LiPo
1-4 = 5 cell LiPo
1-5 = 4 cell LiPo
1-6 = 3 cell LiPo
1-7 = 2 cell LiPo

2-1 = Auto throttle range
2-2 = 1.1ms to 1.8 ms from Recvr
2-3 = Accelerate Fast
2-4 = Accelerate by ramp-up

3-1 = No brake
3-2 = Soft brake
3-3 = Med
3-4 = Hard brake

4-1 = CW rotation
4-2 = CCW rotation
4-3 = Cutoff soft (When battery low)
4-4 = Hard cutoff

5-1 = 2 to 4 pole motors
5-2 = 6 to 8 pole motors
5-3 = 10 to 14 pole outrunner
5-4 = Hi RPM outrunner (I think >20k)

6-1 = 8 kHz PWM for low RPM
6-2 = 16 kHz for outrunners

When done either:
A-Go full throttle to select another
B-Go low throttle to end and save
and you will get a long beep, and "Bob's your uncle"

Next startup will give 2 beeps to confirm all is OK.

If you know more about the diagnostic beep, please share that with everybody, I could not find a list...
Thanks

NOTE the comment that the default setting was for 7s which could make it difficult to programme with 2 or 3s batteries.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes & dreams.

Thank you for your advise. I have several of these ESC's and am well aware of how to program them. The new ones that I have just recieved allow them to be set for any cell count appart from 3 cells. I have been advised by HK support to set them to auto detect (1 short + 1 long )but according to the instructions that I have ,this is for Nimh/Nicad applicatoin.I would like to use a three cell set up.
I am not happy to use the 'auto setting''

I see Hoelshot is having identical trouble with the SS 70-80 series. Looks like there is flashing problem with the controller chip in the latest batch of SS ESCs.

I am thinking that HK has a problem with these units as the two that I have just recieved are replacements for two that I sent back a couple of months ago with the same fault.I believe that they may have the wrong chip.
The SS40/50 is only supposed to be able to be set for "3- 4cell" use,yet I can set the two new ones for ''Auto 7/6/5/4" but not 3.
So this makes me think that they possibly have a chip for a SS70 or similar. What does anoy me is that when I reported this fault a few months ago .it was not rectified. So although HK should be aware of this fault .they do not acknowledge it.I also believe that if I had followed the advise from there 'products expert' then I could have damaged my lipos. This is a great pity, as the SS 40 is a good value /easy to program.that works well.

Hi britinoz,
not sure whether your problem still persists, but I have this ESC with a 3 cell battery in my PZ Corsair. Here is a short howto that might be helpful for programming issue.
nice greetinx
