Thanks for the advice Sawdust and the comments CaleyD, I haven't done nearly enough flying because of the wind - I don't think it's been under 20kph for the whole of November and December at the times I have available to fly. I think the one really valuable lesson I've learned in all that time is to keep the plane upwind of me. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to ditch the plane so hard but I think it had something to do with trying to turn too hard to get the plane flying back towards me from a downwind position; I was getting worried it was getting too far away and may have over-reacted. I know I had a hard long slog through long grass to get the poor bugger back.
I will follow your advice and fly in stronger winds, at least with the axn. I'm not sure the Bixler and I are a strong enough combination yet if I let it get too far away, but I do know the axn has the power even if I don't have the experience. |

I wasn't necesarily suggesting you push yourself beyond your comfort zone if your not feeling ready for it, but if you are and can start to feel comfortable with most moderate conditions it can be a lot of fun in the wilder ones.
I don't have a Bixler but from what I've read the Floater it hasn't got the same sort of zip as the floater, it's a vesatile little bugger and bloody good value for money. It's got a pretty sturdy cf rod reinforcing the wing but I don't 100% trust the foam strips that cover it from the underside. I used ca on them but later found on another part that it didn't seem to stick all that well to that foam so I'm half expecting it to pop out on a loop or high G turn at some point. Next time I'll either use shoe goo or epoxy after roughening up the surfaces, you live and you learn. |

Too late to back out now, Sawdust, I'll fly the axn in wind, and send you the bill when I lose it

You guys seem to know what you are talking about - so here goes - Bought one of my sons an AXN Floater - other sons build and fly own planes ( I build, watch and repair - try to fly but usually ends in
). The AXN wants to allways turn left (even on calm days). None of the boys can get it to fly straight. All control surfaces look good and respond in ground test. Wings all look square, rudder and tail surfaces square - anybody had this problem? Would be a shame to bin it. By the way, watch out for the grub screws holding motor in, when we upacked ours they were loose - not pretty result when in flight, but no serious damage done.

If, as you say, the wings are square, and the cg is correct, (I use the cf rod as the cg), then it must be either the control surfaces, or a lateral weight imbalance; the motor and prop are too small to cause any degree of turn. Make sure the airleron trim isn't too far to the left. If the left turn persists after checking these and the left wing actually drops to make the turn, and you really can't find the cause of the problem, then loosen the push rod on the right wing and slightly lengthen it to push the airleron up a fraction. It's not a perfect fix but it may just do the job.
If it turns left without dropping the left wing, then trim the rudder. Edited by BenGee - 27/Dec/2011 at 5:46pm |

Hi youngatheart and welcome to the forum
. I haven't experienced that problem with mine, or at least not enough for me to have noticed. Does it do it only under power, or only when gliding or is it all the time? You mentioned possibly binning it so I'm guessing it must be fairly severe. It sounds like you've got a couple of boys who've got a pretty good understanding if they're building and flying their own models. If they can't work it out I'm not sure I'll be much help but there will definately be a reason it's doing it. All I can think of is if it's only doing it under power it's a thrust angle problem, if it's all the time I'd think the vertical stabiliser would have to be out of whack. I do find with mine after I've trimmed it in flight to fly straigh and not tend to keep rolling one way that back on the ground things are not visualy very straight.
Hopefully someone with a better understanding will read your post and know exactly what your problem is. I'm taking it and another nitro plane out flying tomorrow and acording to the forecastwinds will be light and boring but at least good for trying to spot odd behaviour like that so I'll pay special attention to it and let you know if it's doing anything funny like that that I just hadn't realy noticed or had just got used to automaticly compensating for. |

Don't any of you tell BenGee this but the other day a group of Ibises where flying through up high when they suddenly started circling in a thermal they found. I threw a fresh battery in the floater as fast as I could and keeping my eye on them because they were high and hard to find again if you took your eyes off them I launched her. It promptly more or less just fell and banged her nose on the ground about 15 feet in front of me. In my big hurry and with trying to keep the birds in sight I'd made the dumbest of mistakes, I forgot to check the wind direction and instead of launching into it I'd launched with it
. Like I said though, don't tell Ben, I think I've got him fooled into thinking I've got at least a little bit of an idea about flying and that I'm not a complete idiot, well not quite complete at least. If he heard about that brainfart moment I'd probably never hear the end of it so mum's the word everybody
