Interesting idea, made me think...

Should be able to get it to work, you need the following
1: Gyro/Gyro's (depending on what, how many stabilizing functions you want).
2: Servo tester/s, (to give the gyro/gyro's the signal to initialize)
3: Servo/servoes (to operate the rudder-surfaces).
4: Battey pack (for the power to the Servo tester, Gyro and the servo/servos)

Your not mad, or we just think alike
what are you thinking of, what model (indoor/outdoor, glider ?)

-Troels, with one foot over the ledge to madness

Hi Blind Vision
lets see if I'm on the right track, Ineed a gyro, servo tester, servo and Battrey.I'm thinking of building a 65" HP42 4 motor biplane using
4x HexTronik 16gm 1700kv outrunners, 4x Turnigy Plush 10amp 9gm speed controls and Turnigy 500ma 2s 20c Lipo pack.My question is what gyro and servo tester would you recomond bearing in mind weight is important eg. the lighter the better?
looking foward to your ideas

holy cr@p... I'm in love with your project -that's almost insane.

I think it might just be cheaper actually to buy the cheap radio from HK, instead of the (minimum 2servo testers and one Gyro, one tester for ESC control, and one for arming the gyro)....

Your are so close to that

Not saying you are going to Control it by RC.

But carrying the weight of the servo testers compared to 1 RX (receiver) will be a huge difference..

In essence you are building the equivalent of a Indoor 4 motored plane (that light) -so carrying servo testers are almost out of the question.

But I love it -right now i feel my head splitting, need more coffee (and some sleep) - marked this thread so i get notifications on it. will be back....

-And notify my fellow brother from another mother aka Trumpy, so he swings by when he gets up.

Hiya Scale FF !
Yep I agree with Troels on this one , you can get a receiver weighing just a few grams these days AND it would have the benefit of being able to vary throttle speed remotely ( and cut it as a fail safe ) as well as provide the stable initialisation signal for the gyro .
There is no rule that says you have to fit remotely controlled surfaces , so technically it would still be free flight ;)
Are you looking for the gyro to provide stabilisation on the roll axis? Rudder axis? elevator?
Not that it makes a difference , but would be good to know what you want to acheive by adding the components .
Trumpy!
Does anybody know how to cancel a bid on e-Bay?
I put in a bid for a “Cowboy Outfit” and it seems I’m only six minutes away from owning the Australian Labor Government !

I think it would be great to launch some model I really hate and see it fly perfectly straight and level to wherever and never be seen again.
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes & dreams.

Great idea sooty, Perhaps a new competition for distance travelled .
I must remember .... when inverted .... down is up and up is down .

hi All
your comments are interesting. Free Flight requires no singal comming from the ground, need I tell you what happens when you turn off the Tx while the model is in the air
I was concieding a BA Naro Gyro 2g or GSWNaro super 19g servo & Gyro?
The simple servo tester?
The Roll Axis is the one I want to control. I am trying to replace the old pendulum control, the idea is to stop a left spiral developing under power. By the way Sooty I hope it dose not fly stright away, distance is not the idea, my old bones don't like the chase any more
Trumpy we are almost neighbours,we fly in your neck of the woods half way between the Bridge and Mannun. I think I replyed to all, Ihope!
By the way guys don't hold your breath on seeing any thing soon i,m not known for high speed building or staying on track, nothing happens fast!!
cheers

on turning the TX of in flight, causing jitter, servos turning to one side, that a thing of the past as most TX/RX has fail-safe build in now.

a Fail Safe usually can be programed to do something you want it to. like setting 3/4 throttle, centering all servos or what you like it too. hence when it loses the signal it goes into Fail Safe (programmed).

But i guess it some free flight competition rules you have to follow.

So have i understood this right; you are building a powered (4 motors) free flight model, that will circle big circles (so you dont have to walk so far)

Just out of curiosity what will happen if it hits a thermal, do you have a "break" on it too ?

for a cheap Gyro/servo/servo-tester:
my first thought are:
HobbyKing GA-250 MINI-MEMS Gyro
HXT500 5g (I love thise)
Simple Servo Tester X2

BUT i have to look into the Gyro (dont buy yet), if it's good enough. -but all in all this setup if far cheaper, You dont need a 19g servo for that aileron correction.

If i held my breath for every interesting project i follow I would bring the CO2 tax down -still there is nothing like following and interesting project, the only thing that better is doing your self.

Cheers
-Troels
