If you have a servo, you can test the Tx. It needs to be able to have one stick axis control one, and only one, output on the receiver. On a heli Tx a stick will affect 2 or 3 receiver outputs (CCPM mixing). Check the manual to see if airplane mode is supported.

The pots are explained in the manual I linked to, but basically they set the gain of the three gyros, and may also be used to enter special modes of the controller board. KK firmware does not support stick centring, but there are others that do. No big deal as you can just use the trim tabs on the Tx anyway.

heli tx is perfect for quad its what nearly everyone uses, the other option is one built for planes, but thats not as good.

often they are referred to as mode 1 and mode 2 controllers with mode 2 being what you have (heli based)

dont worry about stick centering.

the pot meters adjust gain on the gyro's (how strongly they respond)

So, which quad firmware supports a Tx being in heli mode, and what exactly are the benefits compared to plane mode? KK firmware do all the mixing on board so only plane mode will work.

Mode 1 and 2 usually refer to how the functions are organized among the sticks, throttle on right stick vs. left stick etc. and has nothing to do with heli vs. plane.

then i really dont understand what im doing wrong then.
It might be the setting up the escs.
because it keeps tipping over.

But when i put it at 1/4 and hold it above my head the correcting seems good.

By corrections, do you mean the ones done by the gyro?
You need to find out if the motors acts correctly when giving roll or pitch input from the transmitter. If still in + mode, only one motor should speed up at the same time for pitch and one for roll.

What is the consensus? Do we power the board from all 4 ESCs or just one? Has anyone had issues with the magic smoke?

What is the most stable firmware flash for the Quad in the X config? I've tried a few, the last one I used was the XXControl KR vr 2.5. Then, just as I was beginning to have a little control, I broke a prop in my last full set. It seemed to be the most stable I've tried.

I'm having a tough time getting this thing to hover. Any one got any advice or tips?

I think my bird is underpowered and I know it is a bit heavy too.
Does it help having the battery lower down on the airframe? I built this one with the battery about 3/4'' below the bottom of the motors.

I'm using the HK Multi V2.1 Atmega 168.
A custom built aluminium H Shaped (Xcopter) 650mm (Way Too Big) 680grams (frame only. I know, I know).
NTM 2830 motors and Turnigy Plush 30Amp ESCs

I'm at about 5/8ths throttle to get the thing airborne so I need to shave some size and weight.

The next one is only gonna be 450-500mm and way lighter!

I was having Roll problems at first and this firmware seemed to control that but then when I was climbing slowly she pitched forwards, I tried to pull back on the elevator and she went over sideways.
