One reason not to do that is beacuse the ignition can cause a lot of noise in to your RX if you use the same supply for both. Second reason is if your ignition unit failes it could shortcut the power to your RX and you loose all controll...

I use a seperate 6 volt NIMH for the ignition and a 4.8 NIMH for the receiver and servo's. I fly the whole day (about 10 flights of 10 minutes) and than i have enough to fly the next day without charging
I have a rcgf 20 cc and a futaba receiver with 5 servo's Rgds Theo |

I'm curious about the thought that a Schottky diode is being used as a voltage regulator - it isn't one. It will drop .63 volte but that's about it (unless there is a Zener diode as well with a resistor to clamp the voltage)
Oh and regarding engines being set 'too rich' when delivered - normally any engine needs to be run in first and thet needs the setting to be rich (okay, maybe modern engines don't need as much running in as they used to, but it's all down to manufacturing tolerances and some still need to be run in for an hour or so) |

I am using an opto kill switch which eliminates noise from the ignition.
7.2 max charge on a LiFe - 0.63 volts = 5.9 volts which is OK for the ignition. The one I am using from Wrong Way Rc has a couple of diodes and reduces down to 5.3 volts. I guess it is possible for the ignition to short out and drain the battery but I have not read about that actually happening. I feel OK with this and charge more often than I really need to, but like to fly with lots of reserve. Just my preference. I hope to get out to the field again this week and will try to get some pictures. Don't have a vidio so you will just have to imagine it going by

A Schottky diode will (like any other diode) conduct in a forward direction. If there's a short in the ignition, it will allow the current to flow that way and drain the power supply. All it will do as 'protection' is block any reversed polarity.
Bear in mind that when a spark plug fires, there is a momentary short circuit as the current flows between electrodes. Fair enough it only lasts a fraction of a second but it's stll there. Sparks also generate RF - so interference is also a possibility unless sufficient suppression is incorporated (and that adds weight). |

I'm not sure that there is a short circut as such. The spark is generated by the discharge of a capacitor running through a transformer. |

I lost my L-4, grrrrrrr, due to a short circuit in my receiver- battery(the wires were burned). I don't now what happened, but it was the 4th flight that day and after takeoff i made a turn back to the field and at the same moment the engine stops. I tried to make a emergency landing, but nothing happened. No response.... nothing and after 4 seconds the L-4 was broken in about hundreds of pieces. People say a men does not cry, but i was in the neighbourhood of that Terrible!
Now i like to order a new one, but he is in backorder....grrrrrr
