What are you planning to fly with it? What weight?

That's a .50 size airplane, a motor pulling a 16x6 4 blade will be way overkill for a little machine like that. A 16x6 4 blade is comparable thrust to a 20x6 2 blade.

With a four blade 16x6 you'll be able to hover if it's a 3D P-51. If not, you'll be running full throttle all the time due to lack of pitch speed/air speed to keep out getting a tip stall. Peter |

the plane is a rtf and came with that propeller. i'm using a 80 amp esc, 42-60amp 500kv motor and 14.8volt lipo battery. reason why i'm asking about this prop is because it seems like a big load for that type of motor, esc setup.

i'll hook up a amp meter and see what how many amps that propeller draws.

Sounds like a severe case of overkill to me. I fly a sig mess with 35-48 1100 kv motor 50 amp SS speed control with a 10x5 prop. I use 4 cell 2650 battery and the plane is FAST! It is quite a bit lighter 4 lbs RTF with battery. About 6 minutes flight time.
I have a Sig Kougar with emax 920kv motor 60 amp turnigy plush on a 3000 5 cell with a 10x6 APC electric prop and it is a missile. I can also fly it on my 4 cell batteries if I want to go up and just "cruise" around. I use the 5 cell batteries when I want to make a statement on how fast it will really go. For a duration flight I use my 4s 5000 pack in the Kougar. I can get 10 minutes with throttle management. Weighs in at 4.5 lbs RTF with a 5s 3000mah battery.
On 4s both planes above motors run in the 11,000 rpm range. Same rpm as an average 40. The Kougar at about 35amps and the Mess is about 40 amps.
My electric Kougar on 5cells flies just as fast as my other Kougar with a Rossi 45. You can reduce amp draw by reducing prop size thus increasing rpm's.
You might be able to use a similar setup and reduce weight and then get better performance. Just a thought. Edited by RCER88 - 15/Mar/2011 at 12:00pm |
