Guys.. Something I think you are all missing... The screw in the tail is plenty strong enough if you have no vibration. I noticed on spooling up that the tail boom and boom supports vibrate badly at certain throttle settings . When I investigated further, I noticed that the tail shaft bearings had some play in both the bearing and also on the shaft. When I replaced the $0.50 bearings for $2 ones from my local bearing shop. All the vibration was gone and problem solved. I have noticed that a number of the original bearings on the HK500 GT are very sloppy. This magnifies any vibration due to slight imbalances many times and will cause premature failure every time, due to fatigue. This also explains why high tensile screws are failing just as frequently. Beefing up the screws to 3mm will make them last longer but that is just treating the symptom, not the root cause of the issue. Further to this, everyone seems to rely very heavily on thread lock, but if you remove the source of vibration then your screws will not come loose. I'm not suggesting you don't use thread lock, just that you should take time to critically balance each rotating part of your heli before flying it and check for vibrations after any mod or crash.

Not my case. Mine was vibration free, even better than my Trex 500 ESP. But it didn't last long - until I replaced the tail unit to the Trex model. Never failed since.

If you're still having this problem I have just listed my Kasama Tail rotor assembly with blade grips and extras on Ebay. This tail assembly does away with the weak M2 bolts that break and is threaded M3. It is super strong, extremely smooth, and slop free. I purchased this item brand new from Grandrc for $49.95 +$8.50 shipping. It was expensive but still cheaper than the tail flying apart in flight(again). Starting auction price on Ebay is $24.95 +$3.00 shipping. It is used but in like new condition. USA shipping only. Sorry for spamming your forum with my auction but I know alot of ppl here are having this problem. My HK500 tail exploded when the M2 bolt head broke off and I don't think HK sells a solution. See my other auctions for more gently used R/C supplies. http://www.ebay.com/itm/180922080197?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

I also experiment the same tail problem : M2 bolt broken... Simply buy an Align tail rotor and change all the bearings.
And now it's perfect!

Really? I have had TWO Align tail rotor bolts shear at the heads.

And ZERO clone bolts shear at the heads!

So it is a bit of a lottery!

Best solution is to get neither, and find some Aerospace quality Stainless Steel bolts. Buy two for each heli you have, and be done with it. End of problem. My two have lasted for well over 150 flights and have not stretched at all!

I have some helicopters. I crash less than I used to. I now have some fixed wing aircraft. I now crash a little more again! I also have Internet Explorer and can actually edit my signature ...
