I built my HK500GT and read about the tail problem. I flew 5 batteries and on the 6th one, I raised the heli slowly, and 2 feet from the ground, the tail snapped. One of the screws that holds the blade holder on the shaft sheered off. I was able to land hard with following damage. Landing gear, tail unit sheered off, belt snapped, main gear and autorotation gear, tail gear and tail boom holder all have to be replaced. Head speed was not too high as I tamed it down and put a 12 tooth pinion rather than 13.

Come on HK, didn't you read about the problem and still ship with soft screws? Charge a dollar more and provide something a bit more sturdy. I ordered the metal tail rather than the plastic one that comes with the unit.

Look i agree with you that it is an HK mistake to sell a defective product since they know about it but since you were informed about the problem why you didn't change it from the start ?? I never flew my 500 with the stock tail i changed it outright to avoid damage or even injury, you should have done the same. No problems with the metal tail. Really it is irresponsible from your part (as much as HK is irresponsible for not fixing it) to fly a 500 size heli knowing that has defects and not do anything about it but complain afterwards. You knew it what did you expect???

I should have mentioned order.
1) Buy kit
2) build kit
3) broken tail
4) search for problem on forums

I did not see anything on the reviews or posted on the product description warning about the problem.

You should never assume If you don't know.

And, from the description of the kit:

"We guarantee you wont find a better priced heli of this quality anywhere!"

I've had several of these M2 cap screw bolt heads break off,  in most cases while spooling up.

I've also seen the same failure on the Align product.

In my case the failures were eventually traced to a failed Scorpion motor bearing, (causing
enough vibration to fail the tail bolts).

Before I discovered the said motor bearing was the core problem, I drilled out the
M2 hole & tapped to M2.5, followed by a M2.5 screw.

This gives a major increase in screw cross section area, & thus bolt strength.

Threadlocker is for just that, to lock threads, not to prevent bolts from snapping.

I think the OP makes a fair point in that a'known fault' is not mentioned in the product reviews - only after some searching in the forums do the issues become apparent. Trying to blame the buyer flying a heli with a 'known' issue is a bit much IMHO. This is a budget kit targeted at entry level users - most of whome will buy based on the price point. I imagine very few will spend alot of time researching in the HK forums before hitting the buy now button. Perhaps the HK aficionados could add warnings to the product reviews so new buyers are immediatly aware of the possable flaws in the new kit they are about to buy?

Update - I upgraded the tail to the metal tail assembly and the same problem occured. One of the bolts holding the blade holder snapped after a few flights only. I will replace complete heli kit with something different.

Hey guys,
This issue has already been covered in considerable detail previously... in this very forum.

Here is the most recent: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=16345

There are two distinct problems you guys are facing - One is that the tail bolts shear (happens on both plastic and metal tails but is more regular on the metal) and the other is that the plastic tail box can bind and cause the tail to detonate!

Pics of them are in the other thread!
