Well, I discovered the cause of my problems this afternoon - it would appear that I had the polarity of the NiCad battery reversed, and it has fried a small component on the circuit board. It won't turn on, and appears to be totally dead....bummer.

In my own defence (scant though it may be) who on earth uses the red wire for negative and the black wire for positive? Still, I should have checked.

Anyone got a V2 that has died for another reason, but the circuit board is fine? Or alternatively, does anyone have a circuit diagram that would tell me which bit is burnt out, with a view to replacing it?

Chances are that you've fried the regulator and a capacitor on the board.

If you're lucky it's a fairly easy fix -- it's not possible to tell over the internet though.

Can you take a photo and I'll look on mine to find out exactly what's needed. Might just be a diode

Thanks for the offer - I really appreciate it. I'll get a photo this afternoon.

<Edit pic uploaded, with evidently fried component circled in red. Any clues what this is?>

I'll have a look tonight for you. Looks like a regulor and the goods news is they arn't too much.

Edit***   I've taken the radio apart and it's actually a capacitor. I can't read the cap rating but I have a decent magnifying glass at work and I'll take it to work tomorrow and see what it is.

Not sure how succesful the repacment part will be but it's worth a try.

It's a capacitor alright.

These capacitors are polarized and when subjected to reverse polarity they often become a short-circuit.

Replacing the capacitor is relatively simple and its value isn't particularly critical.  I can look on the schematic and tell you what the value is if you like.

Also, you don't need to use one which is exactly the same.  A far more readily available electrolytic capacitor with two wire leads can be used instead.

Its a surface mount Tantalum cap.

Bruce, all i could read was the following   reading from top to bottom with the line at the top.

226
76k
020 or 02Q  i beleive it is 020

Might be best if you could check the schematic and take a look for an appropriate value.

it might be easier to use the legged variety if your not used to soldering small bits and pieces.

226 ~ 22^6pf
22^3nf
22uf
K series are 10% tolerance
020 = 20Vdc rated

Can't remember what the 76 stands for, possibly temperature rating.
I'm a bit rusty but its definitely 22uf.
Make sure to get the polarity correct when you replace it!
