I'm not sure if its mandatory to range check here in Au but its certainly sensible to do them.
The Assan importer in Australia distributes a "dummy load" that you screw between module and antenna. This gives a power reduction to the antenna equivalent of the range check button used also for binding on other systems.
I am using one now after almost losing a model due to a loosely done up antenna screw.
I wonder if HK could stock them?
BEWARE...the plug on the antenna is VERY short..do up the antenna tightly.
If I'd screwed on the attenuator for a range check. I would have noticed the lose screw.
As a side issue, does everyone do a range check with the engine (IC of course) running?
It's amazing the problems a bit of vibration shows up that are not evident when everything's still.
Sound, sound the clarion, fill the fife,
Throughout the sensual world proclaim,
One crowded hour of glorious life
Is worth an age without a name.

Assan is a bit like DSM2 at the moment -- showing its age.  Most other systems (FrSky, Hitec AFHSS, FlyDream, etc) have a power-down range-test function which makes range tests easy.  Having to mess around with a dummy load is clumsy and unnecessary.

Assan still works okay but you'd think that if they were committed to the product they'd update it to add simple but essential facilities such as a range-test button.

Hmmmm, from the DX7 (DSM2)manual:

"Before each flying session, and especially with
a new model, it is important to perform a range
check. The DX7 incorporates a range testing
system which, when the bind button on the back
of the transmitter is pressed and held, reduces
the output power, allowing a range check."
A minimal technical knowledge is required for this hobby; please ensure you know the differences between up and down.

A bit of a "bodge job" if you ask me.

Assan are falling further behind the times these days with no sign of any updates to the product in well over a year.

Most decent 2.4Ghz systems these days have a power-down range-test (which eliminates unnecessary wear and tear on the SMA connector - they can give trouble after too many connect/disconnect cycles) and they also offer far more elegant ways of setting failsafe.

The Assan is still a fine system but it's now in the same ballpark as DSM2 insomuch as it's only a 2-frequency system with some surprising limitations.  For instance, if the primary frequency becomes unusable, it falls back to the secondary but if that becomes unusable -- we'll you're stuffed.

Given the arrival of the FrSky FHSS system, I think the Assan is also rather overpriced these days.

But hey -- if it's working for those who use it, nobody can complain eh?

I have been using Assan since the beginning,,I have the V1 module also...Never had a single glitch.  Since I change to Assan all my planes are in mint condition..my field is very bad for 36 mhz..coming to land we get a 50% chance of glitching into the ground.
I have read your review and I am impressed, and the pricing of FrSky Rx is a very tempting option to change of to FrSky system.  I am waiting for HK to restock the Telemetery Futaba module.

I am hoping you will make a vario module for us to buy.

The weather's starting to clear here (it stopped raining for a while today) so I'll be testing the ultralite vario unit in my DLG once the wind dies down.

I will be waiting for your vario release..soon I hope..  HK just got the Telemetery Futaba module back in stock...I have ordered it and lots rxs...

I will keep the Assan...I have too many rxs to scrap or sell. I will run both, no more new rx for Assan. :)

Your vario comes with German accents  :)  :)

Checking other posts the Frysky system modules seem to be having some issues with reliability so why change at the moment from a system thats reliable to Frysky.I know the Assan system is dated but my experiance so far has been good. Each to his own I suppose.

i would like to do a good range check.

but with a hack module, you cant select "range check modus" on the transmitter. On transmitters that are ment for 2.4ghz, you have that modus. It cuts down the signal strength...
A button on the hack module would be much apreciated.
