This superb Yak 54 is a beautifully designed, built and covered ultra-light aerobatic model that any pilot would be proud to own, good looks aside, this is a balsa high performance 3D plane at an amazing price!
The "30" class is a great size as they are offer ease of transport and are inexpensive to build yet fly like a large model. This Yak offers a satisfying yet quick build with everything fitting "just so", the wings are of course plug in and you have a choice of two motor mounts to choose from. All hardware is excellent quality and includes a CF wing tube, FG horns, cowling blank and so on, a full instruction book is included as are decals.
Flight performance with the right set up is simply brilliant, for 3D flying you will need to use a 4s power train, 3s will be fine for sport flying. Digital high torque micro servos are a must to get the best from this model, particlarly given the size of the control surfaces. The colour scheme is attractive and ideal for orientation, this is a very high quality kit at a brilliant price that will give the 3D pilot and the Sport pilot many hours of fun and enjoyment.
Does anyone know if spare parts for this are available anywhere? I need canopy and fibreglass nose cowl! After faultless flying for 18 months - now this - don't ask!!!
Thanks
The best configuration for this plane is Motor: Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3548-700kv Brushless Outrunner Motor / ESC: HobbyKing 60A BlueSeries Brushless Speed Controller / Propeller: APC style propeller 12x6-E / Servos: Hobby King Digital Servo 2.2kg / 12.5g / .11sec. And a battery 4s 3300~4000mAh. The plane is very fast and torque. Excellent for 3D.
The plane weighs less than 3lbs ready to fly and with similar planes I've used 3s 2200 and 2650 batteries and a 14" or larger prop. A 4S 2200 would be fine depending on your motor and prop but even the weight of one more cell will change how it flies. The LIGHTER the BETTER.
5s 5000mah dooable but overkill and would make for a high cubic loading resulting in a high stall speed. 4s 2200 would be great for 3D with short flight times.I have this setup on mine.

would a 4000mAh 4s go good or should I stick to the 2200mAh 4s. I want to use a turnigy G25 870kv and 55 esc how much flight time do you think i could get with the 2200 4s
Daniel that answer will depend on how far you shove the left stick forward. :) I'll answer by saying this. My Addiction X on a 3s 2200 flies for about 6-6:30 of slow 3D with hovering and harrier flying. What I do is fly like I'm going to fly for say 4 minutes, bring the plane down and check capacity then go from there and extend my timer 30 seconds at a time to get the maximum flight time without draining my battery too much.
just watched the yout tube with this plane, the guy went full throt, and the motor took the engine mount off the plane. As all HK balsa planes reinforce the motor mount it is worth the small amount of extra weight and cheaper than replacing a motor or plane
The best configuration for this plane is Motor: Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3548-700kv Brushless Outrunner Motor / ESC: HobbyKing 60A BlueSeries Brushless Speed Controller / Propeller: APC style propeller 12x6-E / Servos: Hobby King Digital Servo 2.2kg / 12.5g / .11sec. I have bought two of these planes and really love them, however I managed to crash both of them. I rebuilt one plane from parts of the other but the canopy was damaged on both. Can I purchase just a replacement canopy for this plane?
It all looks a bit strange at first but the more you work with it, then it all falls into place. By now (LATE JULY) you should be flying. So how is it. Please tell us.
Can anyone tell me where does the "145mm engine plate" fit? I can't figure that piece out. Just received mine today. Beautifully packed and looks a very nice quality kit. Assembly begins.....
The best configuration for this plane is Motor: Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3548-700kv Brushless Outrunner Motor / ESC: HobbyKing 60A BlueSeries Brushless Speed Controller / Propeller: APC style propeller 12x6-E / Servos: Hobby King Digital Servo 2.2kg / 12.5g / .11sec. i just seen on of the videoes, where the motor mount did not handle full throttle. I just ordered it yesterday, do i need to reinforce the motor mount in any way?
Tsteel short answer Yes. Check all the mount glue joints. Check for any design flaws. Mine had the back plate of the motor mount just pushed in and glued but not notched. Just add a bit more meat there. I hope this helps.

Sheko the G32 is a bit powerful but HK recommends :::35mm Brushless Outrunner Motor 700~900kv. The G32 is equal to a 3542 so I think you will get away with it if you set C of G correct. I hope this helps.
Spitfire you can get the manual under the files tab above. It says on the last page that 3.9 inches (100mm)in from the leading edge. This is a good starting place. I hope this helps.
Hello Have anyone flown this Plane in the mid time, and can tell how she Performs? How does she handles Torquerolls, high-alpha knife edge, harriers, thumbling, and so on?? any feedback would be gr8. thanks in advance
i would like to set up this plane with 3S 2200, did someone already did that? Which prop and spinner i would need to use and how long will flight time be on this battery?
i've do not got this Plane (thil jet?) one of the Big Questions is still -How heavy ist the Flying wight??- and How Heavy is it empty?? 3s 2200 is the under Limit!! for a Plane this sice. I would recommend a 4s setup with 2750mAh Bateries and a 12x6 or 13x6.5 sice Prop. (ca. 7-8 Min Flighttime should be realised with such a setup) u can use a 3s if u dont like 4s it will fly but it will be triky to get enoth Power out of it for 3D! (3s 14x7 60A esc -> short flighttime, not as much Power, and u will use a Lipo that can bring the Punch to drive such a big Prop just with 3s!). so, long speach short meaning. i defnetly would recomment a 4s setup.

Hi at all Does everyone knew if this 1300g weight is Looaded (with Motor and Battery) or empty (without)? Is there a Manual Included? is the (side-)rudder linked by whires or directly with a Pushrod? does any 4s in the mentioned capacity fit? (ask beacouse the thiknes - enoth space between the Wingjoinertube and the wooden Plate?) thaks.
Has anyone got this model yet. I would like to know:
1. What hardware assessories is provided. what else is needed. 2. Is it difficult to assemble. 3. Any particular advice if I shoose to go for electric with G25 motor.

Hi vdass, I didnt got this Plane (jet?) but i can answer u some of your Questions: 1. You need a Transmitter (with receiver) (best 2.4GH) i would recoment a comphuter Transmitter where u can Programm "Expo" and "dual rates" 4 micro servos (try 9g with minimum 2KG Force) for the rudder u can also choose a stronger and bigger one. Then u need as discribed a Speed controller (the Plush's are god controllers) 40A is OK. with 60A Your on the save side. And a Motor. (The G25 seems to be a good choise) and a Spinner and a Propeller and your ready to go. 2.Depends on your Knowledge, if this is not ur first Plane it shouldnt be a Problem. If this is your first Plane it depends on the Manual and your fate relating to crafts. 3. Semms to be a good choice (be shure if u wanna fly 3D you've got more 1:1.2 Weight to thrust ratio.
At least if this is your first 4channel model airplain i would recommend to first try to Fly a more forgiving Plane like a Chessna or a Piper cub to learn how to fly (try one of the foamies them easy to repair.) Hope this helps. Greetings (P.S.:Please dont forgat to credit if this was helpful.) Have you any futher questions ur welcome.
A .46 will be to big and heavy for this frame. One hard landing and your fuse will be in pieces. I would not go for the G25 either, the Turnigy G32 Brushless Outrunner 770kv with a 60A ESC & 14*10 prop on 4S would be better for 3D.
Check out picture 3 . İ*ts structured too light to be not robust. You have only 1 or 2 chance to land badly then fuselage is rubbish. İ* have decathlon 25 which is build same way and i get bored to repair it.
Well if you are a foot off the ground and it doesn't look good you go around Remember never force a plane to the ground let the ground come to the plane
2 or 3 mistakes is always a good idea. I was more talking about someone mentioned bad landings. If it isn't right then don't force it, put the ego away and go around. I would rather see a pilot know he has is in trouble and go around than crash.
Well to be on the safe side most of my models have the (FMA Co-Pilot 2-Channel Flight Stabilization System)on them to assist me with landings and cross wind on landings, it can be switched on and off from your Tx. Hope this will help.
Looks like a nicely built and finished design. The undercarriage seems a little flimsy to me and the wheels are perhaps to small for grass strips, however it seems like its built to be light so that should make up for the lack of strength on landing.
İ*m still insist to fly Glow and some times you have to land emergency this planes structural quality wont carry glow engine and landing gear assembly is rubbish, İ*m looking for middle wing plane for my asp fs 30 glow but not this one.
herofromzero well it is an electric set up plane. It is not built for the vibration oil gas, exhaust of glow. That is the great thing about electric in about 1000 flights I have this season I had 3 forced landings and that was because the pilot decided to fly past the timer on his radio.
What makes you think it isnt suitable for glow? this is how I always used to make glow engine models, all you need to do is fuel proof the inside of the cowl and use rubber isolated engine mounts, all will be fine.
LuboTB: I am having trouble with that as well. If it has some glass in it maybe heavy but it is wood balsa construction ?? Maybe hold off since we are going into winter to see what the second production run comes up with.
At 1300g flying weight its heavier than other 3D models of the same size. My Precision Aerobatics Extra is only 60mm smaller wing and it's flying weight is 980g including a 3S 2200mha pack and its a 3D animal and flys for 6-7 mins.
Stuart PA planes are amazing planes super light and real great flyers. Most HK products I have bought I find are the Chev of the product line(mid range). Then again 90% of the pilots I know can never fly a plane to its max limit anyway so HK fits the bill. I won't be buying this plane after thinking it over. I am starting to lean toward scale more
Best rule of thumb is 'You get what you pay for' if you wanna pay PA prices then your gonna get a good plane, if you dont wanna spend that much then HK is a good medium..
I am fully aware the HK models represent good value. The earlier posts were claiming the 1300g may be too light for it's flying weight but I have shown that not only is it possible but similar models can be lighter still. If you are not into serious 3D you may prefer a slightly heavier model than something around the 1kg area.
Heli-king Any HK plane I have bought I go over every glue joint I can and run and extra bead of glue along. That is quick dry glue but also 5 and 15 minute epoxy. I attach a Q Tip to a wire and dry bend the wire so I can reach deep inside the body. It maybe has saved me a plane or repair after the plane is together. A weak plane doesn't have to be just HK the Hanger 9 Twist has 2 weak points that will break even with perfect landings everytime.
Stuart 90% of the pilots I know from 2 clubs don't do serious 3D. In fact most people could do the same moves in a sport plane. Now I know there are some real good pilots out there but very few.
if this Yak flying weight really is 1.3 kilos, it is very good for 3D. My eflite c-z yak is just a bit smaller than this one and weighs 1.7 kilos. I can do pretty good 3D with it so I look forward to learn more 3D with this one from HobbyKing!
Middyfra: It would be fun but I will hold off till closer to spring. I like to build and buy winter planes at this time. Something that can land and take off from hard packed snow or ice. RC Groups has hundreds of free foam planes you can download build and fly. We use the foamboard from Wal Mart. 4$ a sheet so total cost in the air is about 30 to 40$ 2408/21 (1750 kv) 800-1000 ma 3s and just have fun.
It is unfortunate (dont like to use stronger words in case of the Price) that this Model dosnt got airfoiled stabs (aileron and rudder). (and its a bit of a shame in case of the god looking of this plane that it doenst got airfoild stabs and rudder). Its easy to straightend the landinggear aerea in the body, and its also easy to put some glasfibre to the Motormount to Protect it from damage. But it need much (for me nearly to much) time, to do an airfoil mod to the stabs, elevator and rudder. Would realy like to have a Plane that "feels right" in the air, and along my experience it doesent, with this flat balsa stabs and rudder. Shure it flyies the Way them build this Plane, but i expect it doesnt "feels right" in the air. So why does i expect this?: I've flone Planes with flat Balsa stabbs and rudder before (for example the HK balsa YAK 54 45"), and its shure a difference to Planes with airfoiled elevator and rudder, in case of feel the way u expect in the air. Hope we are lucky and HK let Produce a V2, to beware us from a stabmod. cheers
apology, I meant, in order to retain us for to a stabmod.

Excelente kit! Nao deve em nada aos kits grifes famosas. Coloquei 4 servos Hobby King Digital Servo 2.2kg / 12.5g / .11sec que serviram certinho nos slots das asas e da fuselagem. Motor KD 36-12XL Brushless Outrunner 770Kv EQ: 2826/12, ESC Turnigy Plush 80amp, Helice 14x7, bateria 4S 4000mAh. Este setup ficou perfeito para o modelo!!!

Great Quality kit ! My set up is very simular to "AMR" with the exception that I'm only turning a 13x7 Prop, under load I'm drawing upto 47 Amps and right at 500 watts on a burst, with the "Nanotech" 4S 70-135C 2200mah. I installed a 70amp Thrust ESC instead of the Plush series. More amp rating then they have posted on HK list , but bigger is better all around when using the larger prop series in my book. Been using the Thrust ESC on just about everything I have right now , with no problems at all, plus I have a good supply of extras.
I can highly recommend this kit. Not alot of instructions come in the kit ,just a picture book really.to build, but if you take your time it assembly is a breeze....Love the clean appearance too !

Just finished my build and maidened today. Kit is of very high quality, the nicest kit I have built so far. The detail on the fuselage structure is very impressive. Instructions are via picture book. Not very detailed but adequate. Using the Turnigy G25 and 3300 4S w 14x7 prop. Power is enormous. Had CG at recommended location but found that was too tail heavy for my liking. Plane flies very precisely. Tried inside/outside loops, slow/barrel/snap rolls, inverted flying, inverted flat spin, knife-edge. All maneuvers were easy to execute. Looking forward to developing aerobatic skills further. Have not tried any 3D maneuvers yet.
Based on build and flying experience so far - Five crowns!

Following up on my previous review. I have now had a chance to get in 15 flights. Flight performance is wonderful. However, the landing gear is clearly too weak for this plane. I am going to replace with the 125mm carbon fiber gear set from HK. Have ordered, just waiting for shipment. Also, this is my first exposure to the Turnigy G motors; am quite impressed so far with the G25.
