We love J-3 Cubs here at Hobbyking as you may have noticed! This PNF Cub is remarkably scale for its size, is easy to fly and being a bit bigger can handle more wind than some of the smaller foam J3s we offer. A real favourite with scale pilots, this is a Cub you will be proud to own.
Plug N Fly of course means quick assembly and almost every component is attached by screws, including the 2 wing halves, even the tailplane can be removed for transportation if desired. All servos are pre-installed as is the ESC & powerful Brushless Motor. This model is ideal for RC pilots of all ability and it is not often that a geniuine scale model can be flown by relative beginners. The scale detail is quite amazing, plastic injection moulded parts are used extensively and include the dummy engine, wing struts and and the dummy bungee under-carriage.
Practical features include the linked steerable tailwheel, large magnetic battery hatch, construction of course from tough & easy to repair EPO foam, large "Cub" wheels with rubber tyres and 4s power for guaranteed performance.....a fantastic looking model on the ground and in the air.
Guys, may I ask for your flight time?
I just maiden my Cup yesterday and I was wondering, that my 4S 2200mAh battery was completely empty after 6 mins of half throttle flight. I read something about 17 mins with 2200mMAh S3 battery.
What's your flight time experience with a 2200mAh battery?
Finally flew mine today what a lovely little plane to fly - mild aerobatics, rolls and loops with no bad habits. Only managed a few minutes of flight for its maiden then found the battery (turnigy 1800 4S)very warm. Changed battery and had it sitting about 5 minutes, did a check and all I can get out of it was a continual beeping from the esc. I suspect it may be ESC programming but theer does not appear to be any instructions for teh topfire 45a ESC. Has anyone else experience this? This is a startmax plane by the way(Last page of instruction manual)
solved my own problem. ESc had lost its programming. I was only able to return it to its default settings though asI can't find any instructions for the 45 amp esc days flying next time!!used. All's well that ends well though as I found another unused 2200MAh battery Should be a good dayd flying now!
good for you, hehehe,
I believed your cub has a little bit character during take off. try putting 2 deg right thrust and 2 deg down thrust by adding washers. your cub will fly much better. even on take off . happy flying
Hobby king is kind of bad about parts if it is not a durafly plane. Try another large company that has a yellow fruit in it's name. They have the same plane, for more money, of course.
Brian why not try making one? The shape is pretty simple and just needs the lug on the front by laminating a second piece of foam. If you dont have any EPO, Epp would still be ok as its not integral to the structure. I had noticed that mine also may easily come off so have added a couple of extra magnets.
I used 9xr, at search menu just type: 9171000184 ,
frsky module type: SKU: JR-Combo . you better buy it while in stock!
JR and mode 2. If your using mode 2.
connecting pin JR type not JR radio.
Mode 2 turnigy radio (9XR).
FRSKY module : buy the 5 DB antenna also.
Happy flying.
Range: max 2.5 to 3 kilometers for FPV
I loaded it to my cart ok, are you talking about the thing that pops up that says it usually ships within 3 days? That is their "Just in Time" warehouse. That means they have it at another warehouse nearby. I would hurry if you want it, only 2 left.
hey guys can anyone tell me what the diameter of the landing gear wire is
the yellow wheel hub came off it flight ( it"lost forever ) and I need to get need new wheels and collars
I would try this one. [NTM3548-900] I have used this motor with great success, and it's relatively cheap! This motor spins a little faster than the stock one, but it should be fine with the prop that comes with the plane. Happy Flying!
just buy the radio (turnigy 9x) , for the module frsky (JR type). you wont go wrong with this equipment. I fly my j3 cub 1400mm with frsky for more than 500meters no problem.
hi i am a beginner i have flown glider for quite some time please advice do i buy cub, tough trainer or 182 1300mm pnf.thank you and which one of them is the easiest to transport
with piper j3 you have a big range from slowflying to little acrobatics. with the trainer you won't have so much fun. the 182 is a littlebit harder for landing cause of the front wheel an the bigger fuselage. i think the piper would be the perfect choice. transportation is equal for all of these.
Would this be a good begginer plane ?? I'm re learning to fly and was woundering if this is a good easy fun plane to fly ?? Thanks for the help and if this is not a good easy trainer then what would you recommend ... prefrably big enough to carry go pro and some decent fpv gear ?? any ideas thanks in advanced - Olly
this is a very good scaled model RC airplane, however if you are a ( newbie )beginner then I would suggest you to get Bixler 1 or Bixler 2, preferably Bixler 2 to learn to fly first.
Saul, I would recommend the J3 cub. It is made from general EPO foam (which I prefer over the EPP that the tuff trainer has), and it's classic appearance will light up any airfield. All you need is your Lipoly, and your Radio System! (Transmitter/receiver!) Fly safe and have fun! ~Joe
Saul both are good trainer, so how much of a beginner are you. If never flown and you have no help, go for the Tuff Trainer. If you have flown a bit either but the J3 looks more scale!!
I remove mine pretty often, it takes maybe 2 minutes, were talking two screws on the top and two screws in the landing gear, then you just pop out the wing supports and unhook the ailerons cables. Not a bad job compared to others I have.
The wing cord is the measurement of how wide the wing is. From the leading edge to the the control surface hinge.
If your wing cord is 225mm your CG should be around 75mm
wing cord / 3 = approximate CG. If you are a new pilot you may want to put your actual CG, 3-5mm in front of the calculated CG for easier handling.
Some people are flying it on 3s, just more of a relaxed flight and you want to keep the power on when turning. I run mine on 4s, have not tried 3s yet. 4S has lots of power, more like a Super Cub, lol
yes it can fly on 3s, i have a p51 mustang and it required to have a 4s lipo battery but i use a 3s on it and there was no problem, just remember if you use 4s it will give you more power over 3s.
i fly it with a 3s 2200mah lipo. it flys very good, looping etc. works with 3s. Just Hoovering or torque is not possible with the included prop.
I use a 13x6 and it goes very well with 3s !!
Mine did not, one aileron servo had a two second delay even with different receivers that I tried, changed for mg digitals, works great now. Also read of at least two that crashed bad due to elevator servo failures, changed my as well just to be sure. Very strong motor and esc working very well. Great plane and shows well. I set up flaperons as well, really helps for those slow landing or short fields, takes off like a rocket regardless so don't be afraid of that, cheers
this 1400mm (J3-YE-PNP) ?wingspan plane would be my first rc flight plane. A smaller would would not take the wind very well, right? Can you suggest 4 ch TX/RR radio and a 2200 Ah Lipoly Battery for me? Is there a manual I can download to see construction details? Do you offer a flight simulator that ios for Macs. I think this could behelpful also.
Miles Danek
P.S. Got a prompt of $108. for this plane, but it now disappeared. Will you still honor it? Thanks
get flysky 6ch radio as its similar priced as 4ch, or get the hk one, best is to invest in good radio which has lcd screen, get turnigy 9x with complete module since you sounds like new to rc,,, the orange spectrum DSM2/DSMX is great as you can store many model as well as many choices of receiver for small or big and menu is easy to dial comparing to turnigy. 2200mah is hard to fit but 1600 perfect, (The simple 6ch radio need to hook computer and if mistakenly in field your servos need to be reversed then you fkd up so better with LCD, you won't disappoint for better radio... this is the radio you will be looking: OrangeRx T-SIX 2.4GHz DSM2 6CH Programmable Transmitter w/10 Model Memory (Mode 2) or Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware)
There are very limited options for simulators on a Mac OSX system. If you have dual boot options or if you use parallels for example, you can simply run the windows program from within the Mac system. For IOS there are some pretty cool sims on the Apple store for free. Additional models can be purchased as well.
Yes, it is possible to swap the wheels. the hubs screw off, releasing the wheels. Just be aware of the space of the wheels. I believe DuBro 4" inflatable wheels will fit, giving a soft, squishy, Alaska tundra look.
Hello! I want to buy this, and put some sweet big tundra tires on it. Is that possible without changing the scale landing gear? Has anybody else done it? From the pictures it looks like it got its wheel directly mounted to the landing gear without any way to take it off.

Looks like it would fit. I would still watch the width and either use a washer and lock nut or something to make sure they don't rub against the landing gear fairings. Good Luck.
Hi there. Which is the stock propeller size that comes with it? Descriptions says 12x9! Is that correct? Cause I can not find this size from any brand in HK store.
What If I connect this setup to a 2200mAh-4S-40C Battery? will this burn the ESC Or Motor? And if I replace the stock ESC to a 60A (with the 40C Batt.), will this burn the motor/esc/batt ?
Your ESC is rated 45A stock. Your constant discharge fom the 2200 4S is 40A. Without knowing the burst current which is higher than 40, you might burn out the stock ESC if run at wide open throttle (WOT) for any length of time, such as 30 seconds. The 60A ESC would handle the load better, especially if you like to fly ü*ber fast. Keep in mind that pushing your throttle to max and keeping it there is never good for any motor....your car motor, your J3 plane, any motor. If you put a 40C with a 60 A ESC you shouldn't have much of an issue as long as you don't beat up your motor.
Mad value for money, I can't wait to fly it soon. I have a Sbach 342 as well, but waiting to learn more with this plane first.

1 thumbs up!
Good plane but I would definitly recommend some of the modifications suggested elsewhere. Most importantly cut off the control surfaces and reattach them with the extra hinges provided.
Aeliron separated from the wing along the EPO hinge just as I was landing. Rolled over and hit nose first. May be salvageable with some surgery but took a bit of a beating.

Here is my reply to John @ Customer Support re what I thought was missing front landing gear parts. What the product page shows and what the booklet shows is two different things.
I decided to go with a set-up that I think is shown in the photo on the product page. I will use the four springs on the front landing gear and the two wire links on the tail wheel. I think this must be the way it is show in the picture but not in the instruction booklet. The two wire links are a little long but I will shorten them up. I may even use springs to act as a bungee as per the instruction booklet.
I must add that the 502 ABN Bond cyno glue was rock hard in the bottle and can only be used as a rattle.
The other contact adhesive was also too old and could not be spread. It is the second tube of adhesive I have from you guys that was absolutely useless. The first one I actually paid for!!
As noted on the reviews, the installed nuts for the wing mount were not M3 (or M4 either) and the bolts did not fit. I had to replace the existing nuts with new M4 nuts. (wrong bolts or wrong nuts supplied, anybody's guess)
It is just a shame to get such a nice looking model with no proper instructions and parts that do not fit.
It just takes a lot of extra time to figure out the correct building method.

Well straight out of the box I am very impressed!!!! great scale looks and very easy to construct took me about 1hr and I was also watching TV at the same time haha!! It was also extreamly well packed and probably over bubble wrapped wich is great.
Only problems I had was short 2 x springs for tail wheel and 1 x very bad depression in the main wing, as it was wrapped the way it was I suspect it had this defect before being shipped lost one crown for that.
